Your Voyage to the Bridge
A comprehensive guide to the nautical officer career pathway in the Indian Merchant Navy. From Deck Cadet to Master Mariner, every rank, every examination, every opportunity, charted for you by the Directorate General of Shipping.
Choose Your Entry Pathway
Three approved routes lead to the bridge of a merchant vessel. Each requires sponsorship by a shipping company, clearance of IMU-CET (where applicable), and medical fitness certified by a DGS-approved doctor.
Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)
The most popular route for aspiring deck officers. One year of intensive training at an IMU-affiliated institute, followed by structured shipboard training as a Deck Cadet. Leads to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) upon completion of all six semesters and the Second Mate COC.
- 12th (PCM) with 60% aggregate
- English: 50% in 10th or 12th
- Age: 17 to 21 years
- IMU-CET qualification
- Mandatory company sponsorship
- Vision: 6/6 unaided, no colour blindness
B.Sc. Nautical Science
A comprehensive three-year undergraduate programme at an IMU-affiliated maritime training institute. Provides deeper academic grounding in navigation, ship stability, meteorology, maritime law, and cargo operations. Twelve months of cadet sea time follows, after which the Second Mate COC examination can be attempted.

GP Rating leading to NCV Deck Officer
An entry-level pathway for candidates who have completed 10th or 12th. After six months of pre-sea training and structured shipboard service, ratings can progressively upgrade through RFPNW and Able Seafarer certifications, eventually qualifying for the NCV (Near Coastal Vessel) deck officer certificate and, with further sea time, for foreign-going COC examinations.
- 10th or 12th pass (40% minimum)
- English: 40% in 10th or 12th
- Age: 17 to 25 years
- DGS-approved institute
- Vision: 6/6 unaided, no colour blindness
Mandatory STCW Courses
Every nautical officer must complete these DGS-approved courses at recognised maritime training institutes. Certificates carry a five-year validity and must be refreshed periodically.
The Deck Officer Career Roadmap
From your first day as a Deck Cadet to the day you take command as Master, here is the rank progression, the sea time required, the examinations at each stage, and the indicative salary range.
Deck Cadet
Your maiden voyage. As a Deck Cadet, you undergo 12 to 18 months of structured shipboard training under the supervision of the Chief Officer and Master, completing a Training Record Book (TRB) and Structured Shipboard Training Programme (SSTP). This sea time is the foundation for your entire career.
Third Officer (Second Mate COC)
After completing cadet sea time and passing the Second Mate (Foreign Going) written and oral examination conducted by DGS at MMD centres in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, you are awarded the Second Mate COC and sail as Third Officer. Responsibilities include navigation watch, GMDSS operations, LSA and fire-fighting equipment maintenance, and chart corrections.
Second Officer
With experience as Third Officer, you advance to Second Officer, responsible for passage planning, navigational chart management, and medical duties on board. This rank builds the operational competence needed for the Chief Mate examination. Minimum 9 months of additional sea service as a watchkeeping officer is required before attempting the Chief Mate COC.
Chief Officer (Chief Mate COC)
The Chief Mate COC examination is conducted in two phases (Phase I and Phase II) by DGS. After passing, you serve as Chief Officer, the second-in-command. Responsibilities encompass cargo operations, stability management, crew safety, ISM implementation, and standing as the Master's principal deputy. A total of 18 months of sea service as a watchkeeping officer is the minimum prerequisite.
Master Mariner
The pinnacle. After a minimum of 36 months of approved sea service (including at least 12 months as Chief Officer), you are eligible for the Master (Foreign Going) examination. Upon passing, DGS awards the Master COC, authorising you to take command of any merchant vessel. The Master holds ultimate responsibility for the safety of the ship, its cargo, its crew, and its compliance with international and national maritime law.
Extra Master
An optional but prestigious postgraduate-level examination. The Extra Master certificate demonstrates advanced mastery in maritime law, navigation, ship construction, and meteorology. Highly valued for senior shore-based roles in maritime administration, classification societies, maritime academies, and international organisations such as the IMO.
Certificate of Competency Examinations
DG Shipping conducts COC examinations at MMD centres in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Each level comprises written papers and oral assessment.
Second Mate (FG)
First officer-level certificate. Requires completion of pre-sea training, 18 months of structured cadet sea time, SSTP, TRB, and all mandatory STCW modular and simulator courses.
Chief Mate (FG)
Two-phase examination. Phase I covers advanced navigation, cargo, and ship stability. Phase II covers advanced seamanship and ship management.
Master (FG)
The command examination. Requires 36 months of approved sea service with at least 12 months as Chief Officer. Covers ship command, maritime law, commercial operations, and emergency management.
Extra Master
The highest professional certification in the deck department. An advanced postgraduate-level examination with a mandatory dissertation. Recognised globally.
Salaries vary by company, vessel type, and flag state. Seafarers spending more than 182 days outside India in a financial year may qualify for income tax exemption under Section 5(1) of the Income Tax Act.

Shore-Based Career Avenues
A nautical officer's competencies open doors far beyond the bridge. After accumulating sea experience, many officers transition to rewarding shore-based careers across the maritime ecosystem.
Marine Surveyor
Conduct vessel inspections for classification societies (IRS, Lloyd's, DNV, BV), P&I clubs, insurance underwriters, or as an independent surveyor. Covers hull, cargo, damage, and pre-purchase surveys.
Maritime Administration
Join DG Shipping as a Nautical Surveyor. Conduct statutory surveys, PSC inspections, flag state audits, and contribute to IMO policy formulation at the national level.
Marine Pilot
Guide vessels through ports, channels, and confined waters. Major Indian ports (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, JNPA, Vizag) recruit experienced Master Mariners as licensed harbour pilots.
Ship Management & Superintendency
Serve as Fleet Superintendent, Technical Superintendent, or Marine Superintendent with ship management companies. Oversee fleet operations, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and dry-docking.
Maritime Education & Training
Teach at IMU-affiliated institutes, DGS-approved MTIs, and maritime academies. Extra Master holders are especially sought after as principal, faculty, and external examiners for COC examinations.
Maritime Law & Insurance
Practise as a maritime lawyer, P&I correspondent, cargo claims surveyor, or marine insurance underwriter. A nautical background combined with a law or management qualification opens this high-value pathway.
Port & Terminal Management
Manage port operations, berth allocation, vessel traffic services (VTS), and terminal logistics at major and minor ports, or in private terminal operating companies.
Offshore & Energy Sector
Work on offshore platforms, FPSOs, and in the oil and gas sector as Dynamic Positioning Officers (DPO), Marine Advisers, or Offshore Installation Managers (OIM).
International Organisations
Serve at the IMO (London), IOPC Funds, IHO, or World Maritime University (WMU). Indian Master Mariners with policy experience are valued in international maritime governance roles.
