Roles and Responsibilities

  • Head of the Nautical Wing certifies seafarers through examinations for Masters and Mates.
  • Supervise the registration of ships and maintain the Central Register.
  • Investigate maritime accidents and casualties and examine related reports and proceedings.
  • Inspect ship safety equipment to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Oversee compliance with manning requirements and cargo-related safety standards.
  • Coordinate air-sea search and rescue operations.
  • Approve the use and development of indigenous safety equipment for Indian ships.
  • Manage and guide the training of nautical personnel in the Merchant Navy.
  • Represent India in international maritime bodies and ensure compliance with international maritime conventions.
  • Handle matters related to shipwrecks and salvage operations.
  • Grant statutory dispensations for Masters, Mates, and Radio Officers where appropriate.
  • Oversee safety radio and telegraph surveys, including their extensions abroad.

  • Manages marine insurance including Non-IG authorization
  • Oversees matters under Port Entry Rules, 2012

  • Covers SOLAS Chapter VI (Cargo, Dangerous Goods)
  • Handles safe manning dispensation requests
5 Capt. Harinder Singh Nautical Surveyor-&-DDG(Tech.)
  • Marine incidents and Emergency Response – Branch Head (Part X of the MS Act)
  • LRIT-DGCOMM, MMDAC – Branch Head
  • Matters pertaining to wreck and salvage (Part XII of the MS Act)
  • LRIT & related dispensation
  • ETV
  • Liability and Insurance matters including IOPC matters
  • Cyclones
  • IGMSP
  • Maritime Knowledge Cluster
